The latest season of Star Trek Strange New Worlds is currently airing on Paramount Plus and as an added bonus Episode 4 of the season titled “A Space Adventure Hour” is available to watch for free on YouTube for a limited time.
The USS Enterprise is surveying a neutron star and given the mundane task, Captain Christopher Pike request that his security officer La’An Noonien-Singh test out the newly installed Recreation Room, or Holodeck for short. This new technology has never been used on starships and she is tasked with testing and ensuring its effect in helping crews deal with long term missions into deep space.
While the “holodeck” is prepared a monitor is attached to her while she goes about her day, which includes dance lessons with Spock, as the computer needs to better understand her thinking in order to provide a more responsive program. As she and Spock dance she gets an idea of what kind of program she can enjoy to test out the holodeck. Amelia Moon, a series of novels she was given of a private detective that she enjoyed on the colony ship that she grew up on.
Scotty is informed and sets up the program ready for La’An to test. The setting of the mystery is in the 1960s and focuses on a certain space exploration show that was created in the 60s but a risk of cancellation. You’ll have to watch the rest if you want to know what happens.
Suffice it to say this is a nice casual episode recalling many filler episodes of things going wrong when someone tries to enjoy the holodeck and something goes wrong. There are fun call backs including a spook intro akin to the original series with call backs to William Shatner’s acting delivery of Kirk and the low budget effects of the era.
Hopefully as the episode is watched and rewatched that comments will not be negative over the fact that show took a light hearted approach and decided to follow the spirit of the 90s series with a holodeck episode. As usual it will be a problem and we will see how they resolve the issue.
